Frequently asked questions
What is an ASP?
An Accredited Service Provider (ASP) is a professional qualified to perform electrical work that connects properties to the electrical network. In New South Wales, ASPs must be accredited by network providers such as Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, and Essential Energy. At Hello Electrical, our ASP services encompass a wide range of tasks, including:
Providing temporary power supplies for builders
Performing mains electrical work and repairs for residential and commercial properties
Disconnecting and reconnecting from the mains network (Class 2A)
Installing or upgrading new electrical meters (Class 2D)
Installing, upgrading, connecting, and energising underground service lines (Class 2B)
Installing, replacing private power poles
Installing, upgrading, connecting, and energising overhead service lines (Class 2C)
Relocating or upgrading switchboards
Converting power systems from single-phase to three-phase
Installing network devices such as off-peak or controlled load meters
What is a level 2 electrician?
A Level 2 electrician is a specialized Accredited Service Provider (ASP) certified to handle complex electrical tasks, particularly those related to connecting properties to the electricity network. Unlike Level 1 electricians who work on high-voltage systems, Level 2 electricians focus on low-voltage installations, maintenance, and repairs. Level 3 electricians typically engage in network design or engineering. At Hello Electrical, our Level 2 electricians are highly trained and accredited to deliver safe and reliable electrical services tailored to your needs.
What is a defect?
An electrical defect notice signifies that your electrical installations do not meet the safety standards set by Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy or The NSW Service & Installation Rules. Receiving a defect notice requires you to contact a Level 2 electrician to correct the issues within the time frame noted on the notice. This is generally 21 days. Failing to address the defects may result in your electricity supply being disconnected until the necessary repairs are completed. Hello Electrical's experienced electricians are ready to assist you in resolving any defects, ensuring your property is safe and compliant.
Why did my electricity retailer defect my meter box?
As part of a statewide initiative, older electrical meters in NSW are being replaced with new smart meters at no cost to homeowners. However, properties with outdated or unsafe electrical installations must be upgraded before the new meters can be installed. If an installation is deemed unsafe, a defect notice is issued, requiring a Level 2/ASP electrician to perform the necessary upgrades. Common defects include the lack of a Service Protection Device (SPD) or Meter Protection Device (MPD). Hello Electrical specializes in upgrading electrical systems to meet the required standards for smart meter installations.
What is an SPD/MPD?
A Service Protection Device (SPD) or Meter Protection Device (MPD) is crucial for safeguarding your electrical system. These devices, often seen as large black fuses, play a vital role in protecting your property’s electrical infrastructure. The SPD is rated at 100 amps, while the MPD is rated at 80 amps, specifically designed to protect the meter. In many residential settings, these devices are combined and derated to 80 amps. SPDs and MPDs help prevent damage from electrical faults and enable safe power disconnection during emergencies. Hello Electrical ensures that your SPDs and MPDs are properly installed and maintained for maximum safety and efficiency.
